In plain words

Keeping company with your worst inner enemies

is like living among poisonous snakes.

So I have worked hard to shake them off.

You don't make peace with what poisons you — you deliberately shake it off, whether it's an inner passion or a bad influence.
The deeper layer

You don't make friends with what poisons you. This shabad is in Raag Bihaagraa, and it closes this section.

dootan sangree-aa — keeping company with your worst enemies. These enemies are the strong feelings inside, like greed and anger, and the influences that feed them. bhu-i-angan basree-aa — it is like living with poisonous snakes.

The wise answer is to act. anik upree-aa — I made every effort to shake them off. You don't settle down next to what harms you. You move away. Think of a phone game that makes you cranky every time you play. The smart move is to delete it, not to keep it open. Another shabad in this raag spoke about choosing your company wisely. This one adds the work we do on ourselves.

A Question to Sit With

What inner 'snakes' or influences would you be wise to actively shake off rather than tolerate?
