Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
No one knows the full state of the One.
The yogis, the celibates, the penitents, all the clever ones — every one of them has come up short.
The section's final shabad (Raag Bihaagraa, Ninth Mehl) opens with the great humbling that has echoed through the whole raag: "No one knows the state of the Lord." Every spiritual expert — yogi, celibate, penitent, and "all sorts of clever people" — "has failed" to fathom it. This is not a counsel of despair but the leveling truth that ends all spiritual pride: the One is beyond everyone's grasp equally, so no one can look down on anyone.
How does it level the field to know that no expert, however accomplished, fully grasps the deepest thing?
