In plain words

My mind — the One's name is my companion, my brother.

Under the teaching I sing that Name; it will help me at the end and see me through in the One's own court.

The good you keep close becomes the companion for the one road no one else can walk beside you.
The deeper layer

The One's Name is a friend and a brother who stays with you all the way.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. It speaks to the mind like a friend: man mayray, my mind. The Name, raam naam, is my sakhaa, companion, and bhaa-ee, brother. It is family that does not leave.

The verse looks all the way to ant, the end of life. It says the Name will be baylee, a helper, then. It will free me in the dargeh, the One's court.

Think of the first day at a new school. You walk through the gate on your own, but a best friend's voice is in your head: "You've got this." The Name is like that friend for the one doorway each person walks through alone. This is comfort, not fear. The song you sang all along turns out to walk beside you.

A Question to Sit With

What would you most want to have kept close, for the moments you have to face on your own?
