In plain words

You yourself are the giver, the one who knows the inside of every heart — and by your grace you planted this longing for you in me.

My mind and body ache for the One, and the One filled the ache; I've stepped into the shelter of the teaching.

Even your longing for the good was planted in you — which means you were already being drawn before you noticed.
The deeper layer

Even your wish to be close to the One was a gift the One planted in you.

The verse calls the One daataa, the Giver, and antarjaamee, the One who knows every heart from inside. Kar kirpaa loch mayrai man laa-ee — by Your kindness You put this longing in my mind.

This clears away a quiet worry: "Do I want the One enough?" The wanting itself was given to you. So you were already being drawn close before you noticed.

Think of the smell of a favorite dinner drifting from the kitchen. The hunger you feel was started by the cooking. The same kitchen that made you hungry is the one that feeds you. The One who plants the thirst is the One who fills it. Parabh loch pooree — God filled my longing, and I came into the sarnaa-ee, the shelter, of the True Guru.

A Question to Sit With
