Even a Fruitless Search Empties You to the Door

Roaming and wandering around, I have travelled over the whole world, and now, I have arrived at the Lord's Door.

The Lord has eliminated my evil-mindedness, and enlightened my intellect; O servant Nanak, the Gurmukhs are saved. ||4||1||2||

In plain words

I ran and ran all over the world. Now I have come to the One's Door.

The One wiped out the bad thinking in my mind and lit up my understanding. Nanak says: those who face the Guru are carried across.

Even a long, fruitless search can empty you enough to finally arrive at the door that was always there.
The deeper layer

After running around the whole world, the speaker finally comes to the One's door, and there the light comes on.

Dhaavat Dhaavat sabh jag Dhaa-i-o — running and running, I ran through the whole world. Ab aa-ay har du-aaree — now I have come to the One's door.

The search was not wasted. All that wandering wore him out enough to be ready to arrive. Think of a child lost in a big shop, running up every aisle. At last they stop, look up, and see their parent waiting at the door.

At the door the One does what no rite could do. Durmat mayt — the One wipes out bad thinking. BuDh pargaasee — the One lights up understanding. The darkness of the verse before is finally lit. It is lit not by more effort, but by arriving and being welcomed. Nanak ends: gurmukh taaree, those who face the Guru are carried across.

A Question to Sit With

Has a long detour ever turned out to be exactly what got you ready to arrive somewhere true?
