A Humble Turned Heart Stands Taller Than Rank

Relatives, relations and family bound through Maya are of no avail.
har kaa daas neech kul oochaa tis sang man baaNchhat fal paa-i-aa. ||2||
The Lord's servant, although of lowly birth, is exalted. Associating with him, one obtains the fruits of his mind's desires. ||2||

In plain words

Family and relations tied together only by glitter are no true help.

The One's servant, even of the humblest birth, stands tall; keep their company and your heart's wishes come true.

Worth has nothing to do with rank — a humble person turned toward the One stands taller than any connection.
The deeper layer

The verse draws a bold line and makes a radical claim. Bonds held together only by Maya — mutual advantage, appearances — cannot really carry you. But "the Lord's servant, although of lowly birth, is exalted." Here the raag anticipates its great equality theme: worth has nothing to do with social rank and everything to do with a heart turned to the One. Keep company with such a person, whatever their station, and you gain more than any well-connected family could give.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever met someone of no special status whose company made you genuinely better?
