In plain words

First a person lives curled in the mother's womb; then, leaving it, comes out into the world.

Grand houses, lovely gardens, palaces — none of it goes with them when they go.

Everything grand you might build stays behind when you go — worth remembering while you decide what to build.
The deeper layer

The Panch-Pada opens the block's most sustained memento-mori, and it begins at the very beginning: the womb, then birth. The frame is life's whole arc, entry to exit. And the first thing it establishes is what does not travel — mansions, gardens, palaces. This is not gloom for its own sake; it is a clearing of vision, so that by the shabad's end the one thing that does go with you can stand out clearly against everything that stays behind.

A Question to Sit With

If you knew none of your possessions could come with you, what would you spend your energy building instead?
