Every Clever Shortcut Around the One Quietly Fails

ਗੂਜਰੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥
goojree mehlaa 3.
Goojaree, Third Mehl:
ਜੁਗ ਮਾਹਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੁਲੰਭੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਇ ॥
jug maahi naam dulambh hai gurmukh paa-i-aa jaa-ay.
It is so difficult to obtain the Naam, the Name of the Lord, in this age; only the Gurmukh obtains it.
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਵੇਖਹੁ ਕੋ ਵਿਉਪਾਇ ॥੧॥
bin naavai mukat na hova-ee vaykhhu ko vi-upaa-ay. ||1||
Without the Name, no one is liberated; let anyone make other efforts, and see. ||1||

In plain words

In a noisy, distracted age, it is genuinely hard to hold onto the One's name — only the one who turns to face the teaching manages it.

And without that inner name, nobody gets free. Try every other trick you like and watch — they don't do it.

In a distracting age, holding onto the One is hard — and every clever shortcut around it quietly fails.
The deeper layer

This line is honest: in a busy, noisy time, it is hard to keep the One in mind.

The verse says jug maahi naam dulambh hai — in this age the Naam, the Name, meaning living close to the One, is hard to get. Only the gurmukh gets it. A gurmukh is someone who turns to face the Guru's teaching.

Then comes an almost playful challenge. Vaykhhu ko vi-upaa-ay — let anyone try other ways, and see. Go ahead and test the other shortcuts. You will find they do not set you free.

Think of a phone full of apps that promise to make you calm. You try one after another. None of them works the way a quiet walk with someone you love does. This is not meant to make us feel low. It clears away the fake shortcuts, so the real road stands out plainly.

A Question to Sit With

What distracts you most from the things you actually care about, and what would help you face them?
