Verse 4 of 9

Anchor in What Death Can't Reach

ਐ ਜੀ ਕਾਲੁ ਸਦਾ ਸਿਰ ਊਪਰਿ ਠਾਢੇ ਜਨਮਿ ਜਨਮਿ ਵੈਰਾਈ ॥
ai jee kaal sadaa sir oopar thaadhay janam janam vairaa-ee.
O Dear One, death hangs constantly over his head. Incarnation after incarnation, it is his enemy.
ਸਾਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਤੇ ਸੇ ਬਾਚੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬੂਝ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥੩॥
saachai sabad ratay say baachay satgur boojh bujhaa-ee. ||3||
Those who are attuned to the True Word of the Shabad are saved. The True Guru has imparted this understanding. ||3||

In plain words

Dear One — death hangs over the head all the while; life after life, it plays the enemy.

Those tuned to the true Word are carried across; the teaching has made this clear.

Death stops being a terror not by denying it but by anchoring your life in something death cannot reach.
The deeper layer

The verse states the human predicament plainly — mortality "hangs constantly over his head" — and does not flinch from it. But it immediately gives the answer: those "attuned to the True Word of the Shabad are saved." The looming enemy is disarmed not by denial but by anchoring life in something the enemy cannot reach. Death remains a fact; it stops being a terror for the one whose center is in the deathless Word. Understanding, imparted by the teaching, is what turns the dread into peace.

A Question to Sit With

How do you relate to the fact of mortality — with dread, denial, or something steadier?
