Plant Something That Stays in the Running Mind

ਚਲ ਚਿਤ ਵਿਤ ਭ੍ਰਮਾ ਭ੍ਰਮੰ ਜਗੁ ਮੋਹ ਮਗਨ ਹਿਤੰ ॥
chal chit vit bharmaa bharamaN jag moh magan hitaN.
The fickle consciousness wanders around chasing after wealth; it is intoxicated with worldly love and emotional attachment.
ਥਿਰੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਦਿੜੰ ਮਤੀ ਗੁਰ ਵਾਕਿ ਸਬਦ ਰਤੰ ॥੩॥
thir naam bhagat dirhaN matee gur vaak sabad rataN. ||3||
Devotion to the Naam is permanently implanted within the mind, when it is attuned to the Guru's Teachings and His Shabad. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The restless mind runs after wealth, drunk on worldly love and clinging.

But devotion to the Name is planted for good in the mind that is tuned to the teaching and the Word.

The cure for a mind that keeps running after the next thing is to plant in it something that finally stays.
The deeper layer

A running mind settles when something good is planted in it.

The verse shows two kinds of mind. Chal chit vit — the restless mind chases wealth. It gets drunk on moh, clinging to worldly things. It is scattered and always wants the next thing.

The other mind has naam bhagat, love for the Name, planted in it for good. That happens when it is tuned to the Guru's teaching and Word. The difference is staying power. Worldly love is like a sugar rush. It wears off and leaves you wanting more. Love for the Name, once planted, holds on, like a tree with deep roots. You do not cure a running mind by chasing it. You plant something in it that stays.

A Question to Sit With

What keeps your mind running? What steady thing, if truly planted, might let it rest?
