Verse 3 of 8

Hands Out Before One Source Is a Shared Dignity

ਅਲਖ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਏਕੋ ਵਰਤੈ ਏਕਾ ਜੋਤਿ ਮੁਰਾਰੀ ॥
alakh niranjan ayko vartai aykaa jot muraaree.
The One unseen immaculate Lord is pervading everywhere, as is the Light of the Lord.
ਸਭਿ ਜਾਚਿਕ ਤੂ ਏਕੋ ਦਾਤਾ ਮਾਗਹਿ ਹਾਥ ਪਸਾਰੀ ॥੩॥
sabh jaachik too ayko daataa maageh haath pasaaree. ||3||
All are beggars, You alone are the Great Giver. Reaching out our hands, we beg from You. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The unseen, spotless One fills every place, and so does its light.

All are beggars; You alone are the Great Giver. We reach out our hands and beg from You.

Whatever our station, we all stand in the same posture — hands out before one generous source; that shared begging is a kind of dignity.
The deeper layer

We all hold out our hands to the same Giver.

Alakh niranjan ayko vartai — the One, unseen and spotless, is present everywhere. The One's light is in every place. Then the verse says something humbling. Sabh jaachik too ayko daataa — all of us are asking, and You alone are the Giver. We reach out our hands to You.

Picture a whole school lining up for lunch. The principal and the youngest kid hold out the same tray. Whoever we are, we all stand the same way before the one source. That is nothing to be ashamed of. It is a true kind of dignity. We know we are receivers of a huge generosity, standing side by side with everyone else.

A Question to Sit With

Does picturing everyone, high and low, with hands out before the same source change how you see people?
