The Saddest Trade: Free Peace for the Ache of Grasping

Shalok, Third Mehl:
Dharig tinHaa daa jeevi-aa jo har sukh parhar ti-aagday dukh ha-umai paap kamaa-ay.
Cursed is the life of those who forsake and throw away the peace of the Lord's Name, and suffer pain instead by practicing ego and sin.

manmukh agi-aanee maa-i-aa mohi vi-aapay tinH boojh na kaa-ee paa-ay.
The ignorant self-willed manmukhs are engrossed in the love of Maya; they have no understanding at all.
halat palat o-ay sukh na paavahi ant ga-ay pachhutaa-ay.
In this world and in the world beyond, they do not find peace; in the end, they depart regretting and repenting.
By Guru's Grace, one may meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and egotism departs from within him.

O Nanak, one who has such pre-ordained destiny, comes and falls at the Guru's Feet. ||1||

In plain words

What a waste, to throw away the peace of the Name and take on the ache of ego and wrongdoing instead.

Lost in love of the glitter, the self-centered have no understanding; here and beyond they find no peace, and leave full of regret. But by grace one holds the Name, and ego departs; Nanak says, the one with such destiny comes and falls at the teaching's feet.

The saddest trade is giving away a free peace to take on the ache of the grasping self — and the door back is always open.
The deeper layer

The Shalok laments a bad trade: throwing away "the peace of the Lord's Name" and picking up "pain instead by practicing ego and sin." It is the Vaar's recurring grief — that people trade the free peace on offer for the ache of the grasping self. But it does not end in condemnation: "by Guru's Grace, one may meditate... and egotism departs." The door stays open; the graced one "falls at the Guru's Feet."

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever traded a real peace for the 'ache of ego'? What would trading back look like?
