Sikhism·Raag Goojaree·Shabad 57
Verse 8 of 66

The Awakened Aren't Self-Made Superiors but the Graced

ਮਃ ੩ ॥
mehlaa 3.
Third Mehl:
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸਿਖ ਕੋ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਲੇਵੈ ॥
gur kee sikh ko virlaa layvai.
How rare are those who receive the Guru's Teachings.
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਸੁ ਆਪਿ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਦੇਵੈ ॥੨॥
naanak jis aap vadi-aa-ee dayvai. ||2||
O Nanak, he alone receives it, whom the Lord Himself blesses with glorious greatness. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

How rare are the ones who truly take the teaching in.

Nanak says: only the one the One graces with greatness receives it.

Those who truly wake aren't self-made superiors — they're the graced; which keeps everyone humble.
The deeper layer

A two-line Shalok on rarity and grace. Truly receiving the teaching is rare, and it is given — "whom the Lord Himself blesses." This keeps the whole Vaar humble: those who wake are not self-made superiors but the graced. It heads off any spiritual pride before it can start.

A Question to Sit With

When you've received something rare and good, can you hold it as gift rather than achievement?
