When your soul feels heavy and sad, bring your prayer to the teaching.
Let go of all your cleverness and give your whole self over. Adore the teaching's feet, and the wrong-mindedness burns off. Join the good, and you cross the hard, frightening sea. Serve the true teaching, and you won't die of fear in the hereafter. In an instant it makes you glad, and the empty cup is filled to overflowing. The mind grows content, remembering the One always. But only the one graced gives themselves to the service.
The sixth Pauree opens with one of the most quoted and comforting lines in the raag: "When your soul is feeling sad, offer your prayers to the Guru." It is direct pastoral counsel for low days — bring the sadness to the teaching, drop the cleverness, hand yourself over. And the promise is tender and swift: "in an instant, He shall make you happy, and the empty vessel shall be filled to overflowing." The sad, empty heart is exactly the one grace loves to fill.
Where do you take your sadness? What would it be like to bring it, honestly, to what steadies you?
