Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
You come to mind, Master, when I see Your devotees.
My mind's grime is washed off in good company. The fear of birth and death lifts, meditating on the humble servant's word. The good untie the knots, and the demons scatter. They stir us to love the One who set up the whole universe. The seat of the endless One is the highest of the high. Day and night, palms pressed, with every breath, remember. When the One turns merciful, we reach the company of its devotees.
The ninth Pauree makes the devotees a kind of reminder of the One: "You come to mind... when I behold Your devotees." Good people point past themselves; seeing them, you remember the One they love. This is the deepest function of holy company — not to be admired for themselves, but to keep turning your attention back to the source. And even reaching such company is grace: "when the Lord Himself becomes merciful."
Who, when you see them, makes you think of something larger and better than themselves?
