O Nanak, may I never forget the Naam, the Name of the Lord, for even an instant; be merciful to me, Lord God. ||2||

In plain words

Bless me with noble thoughts, One of the universe, and reflection in the pure company of the good.

Nanak says: may I never forget the Name even for an instant; be merciful to me.

The deepest ambition here is modest and profound: to think well, in good company, and never forget the One.
The deeper layer

A simple prayer for two things: "sublime thoughts" and "contemplation in the Saadh Sangat." Notice what is asked for — not wealth or rescue, but a better inner life and good company to grow it in. The quality of our thoughts and the quality of our company are what shape a soul, and here both are requested as grace. The deepest ambition in the Vaar is simply: think well, in good company, and never forget the One.

A Question to Sit With

If you could ask for a better inner life and better company, what specifically would you ask for?
