Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
At the start, in the middle, and at the end, the One has saved me.
The teaching gave me the Name, and I tasted the nectar. In good company I sing the One's glories day and night. I've gained everything, and I won't wander the circling again. Everything is in the Creator's hands; it does what is done. Nanak begs for the dust of the feet of the good, which will carry him home.
This Shalok reviews a whole life held — "in the beginning, in the middle and in the end, the Lord beyond all has saved me." Looking back, the speaker sees rescue at every stage, not just once. And after all he has received, his final request is the humblest: "the dust of the feet of the Holy." A life full of grace ends not in a boast but in wanting only the lowest place among the good — because that place is where deliverance was found all along.
Looking back, where can you see you were 'saved' or carried at different stages of your life?
