Verse 3 of 5

Endless Appetite Never Fills Itself

All day long, you shall wander in the forest, and even then, your belly will not be full.
You did not follow the advice of the humble devotees, and so you shall obtain the fruits of your actions. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

You can roam all day and still not fill the belly.

Not having listened to good counsel, you meet the results of your own choices.

Endless appetite never fills itself — and much suffering is simply the fruit of ignoring guidance that was offered.
The deeper layer

Chasing and chasing never fills you up.

Saaro din dolat ban mahee-aa — all day you wander in the forest. Ajahu na payt agh-eehai — and still your belly is not full. Endless wanting is like scrolling a feed that never ends. You keep going, and you never feel done.

The verse also names the help that was missed. Jan bhagtan ko kaho na maano — you did not listen to the humble devotees, the people who love the One. Their advice was right there. So what comes is the fruit of your own choices. It is not a random punishment. It is what naturally grows from ignoring good guidance that was offered.

A Question to Sit With

Whose good counsel have you had available but not followed? What might change if you did?
