ਸਭ ਤੈ ਉਪਾਈ ਭਰਮ ਭੁਲਾਈ ॥
sabh tai upaa-ee bharam bhulaa-ee.
You created all, and You lead them astray in doubt.
ਜਿਸ ਤੂੰ ਦੇਵਹਿ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥੨॥
jis tooN dayveh tiseh bujhaa-ee. ||2||
They alone understand, unto whom You give understanding. ||2||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
You made everyone, and it's within Your play that they wander in confusion.
Only those understand to whom You give understanding.
Whatever clarity you have, you have by gift, not by your own superior insight — which keeps understanding humble.
The verse holds a humble mystery: the One "created all," and even the confusion ("You lead them astray in doubt") is somehow within its working; understanding itself is "given." This keeps Naam Dayv from any pride in his own clarity — he sees only because sight was granted. It is the raag's steady humility: whatever we grasp, we grasp by gift, not by our own superior insight.
A Question to Sit With
When you understand something others don't, can you hold it as a gift rather than a credit to yourself?
