Verse 3 of 4

Like a Bird's Path, the One Leaves No Trail

ਜਿਉ ਆਕਾਸੈ ਪੰਖੀਅਲੋ ਖੋਜੁ ਨਿਰਖਿਓ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥
ji-o aakaasai pankhee-alo khoj nirkhi-o na jaa-ee.
As the path of a bird's flight across the sky cannot be seen,
ਜਿਉ ਜਲ ਮਾਝੈ ਮਾਛਲੋ ਮਾਰਗੁ ਪੇਖਣੋ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥੨॥
ji-o jal maajhai maachhlo maarag paykh-no na jaa-ee. ||2||
and the path of a fish through the water cannot be seen;||2||

In plain words

Just as a bird's path through the sky leaves no trace,

and a fish's path through the water can't be seen —

Like a bird's path through the sky, the One is real and moving yet leaves no trail the eye can follow.
The deeper layer

A bird flying across the sky leaves no path behind it, and neither does a fish in water.

Naam Dayv reaches for two beautiful pictures. Ji-o aakaasai pankhee-alo — like a bird in the sky, whose path cannot be traced. Ji-o jal maajhai maachhlo — like a fish in the water, whose track cannot be seen.

Look up and watch a bird fly past. A moment later, the sky is just the same. There is no line showing where it went. The bird was real, and it really flew. It simply left no trail.

This verse leaves its sentence open, and the next verse finishes it. The One is like that bird and that fish. The One is real and always moving through the world. But the One leaves no track the eye can follow. What leaves no trail is not missing. It is only beyond following.

A Question to Sit With

What real thing moves through your life leaving no visible track — felt, but not mapped?
