Outer Worship's Whole Toolkit Is Insufficient

ਧੂਪ ਦੀਪ ਨਈਬੇਦਹਿ ਬਾਸਾ ॥
Dhoop deep na-eebaydeh baasaa.
Even with incense, lamps, offerings of food and fragrant flowers,
ਕੈਸੇ ਪੂਜ ਕਰਹਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਦਾਸਾ ॥੩॥

how are Your slaves to worship You? ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Even with incense and lamps, with food and sweet-smelling flowers,

how can Your servants worship You?

The whole toolkit of outer worship is shown insufficient — the real question is what the heart, not the hands, can give.
The deeper layer

No set of worship tools is enough.

Dhoop deep na-eebaydeh baasaa — incense, lamps, offerings of food and flowers. These are the things used in outer worship. Then comes a helpless question. kaisay pooj karahi tayree daasaa — how are Your servants to worship You?

The shabad has shown the problem step by step. The things are not pure. The world is mixed. The One is beyond compare. Think of a shiny toolbox that still can't cheer up a sad friend. Only you can do that, by showing up.

Ravi Daas has taken apart our trust in outside offerings, one piece at a time. The question hangs in the air. It waits for an answer only the heart can give.

A Question to Sit With

If the 'right objects' aren't the point, what does your heart actually have to offer?
