Verse 2 of 3

Given to the One, Praise and Blame Lose Their Grip

ਲੋਕਨ ਕੀ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ਉਪਮਾ ਤੇ ਬੈਸੰਤਰਿ ਜਾਰਿ ॥
lokan kee chaturaa-ee upmaa tay baisantar jaar.
I have burnt in the fire the clever devices and praises of the world.
ਕੋਈ ਭਲਾ ਕਹਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਬੁਰਾ ਕਹਉ ਹਮ ਤਨੁ ਦੀਓ ਹੈ ਢਾਰਿ ॥੧॥
ko-ee bhalaa kaha-o bhaavai buraa kaha-o ham tan dee-o hai dhaar. ||1||
Some speak good of me, and some speak ill of me, but I have surrendered my body to You. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I have thrown into the fire all the world's clever tricks and flatteries.

Some speak well of me, some speak ill — but I have given my whole self to You.

When your whole self is given to the One, praise and blame lose their grip — you stop living at the mercy of the crowd's verdict.
The deeper layer

The verse names two things burned up: "clever devices" (the scheming self-management) and the tyranny of others' opinions. "Some speak good of me, and some speak ill" — and having surrendered to the One, he is freed from being ruled by either. When your whole self is given to the One, praise and blame lose their grip; you no longer live at the mercy of the crowd's verdict. Surrender frees you from the exhausting court of public opinion.

A Question to Sit With

How much do others' opinions rule you? What would it be to be free of both their praise and their blame?
