Verse 2 of 3

Know Many Things and Miss the One Understanding

ਜਿਨ ਕੈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਨਾਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਤੇ ਬਿਗੜ ਰੂਪ ਬੇਰਕਟੀ ॥
jin kai hirdai naahi har su-aamee tay bigarh roop bayrkatee.
Those who do not have the Name of their Lord and Master within their hearts, are the most wretched, deformed lepers.
ji-o niguraa baho baataa jaanai oh har dargeh hai bharsatee. ||1||
Like the person who has no Guru, they may know many things, but they are cursed in the Court of the Lord. ||1||

In plain words

Those with no Name in their hearts are truly impoverished, however much they seem to have.

Like someone with no teacher — they may know many things, yet miss what counts most.

You can know many things and still miss the one understanding that grounds a life — information isn't the same as wisdom.
The deeper layer

This line says you can know lots of things and still miss the one thing that matters.

Jin kai hirdai naahi har su-aamee — those who do not have the One in their hearts are poor in the ways that count. That is true however much they own or know.

Then comes a comparison. Ji-o niguraa baho baataa jaanai — like someone with no Guru, no true teacher, who knows many things. In the Court of the One, all that knowing is not enough.

Think of someone who knows every fact about swimming but has never gotten into the water. Facts are not the same as wisdom. You can collect a head full of information and still miss the one understanding that holds a life steady. That understanding comes from the Name.

A Question to Sit With

Where might you 'know a lot' about something without the deeper wisdom it points to?
