Verse 2 of 3

The Whole Journey Is a Homecoming

ਜਹ ਤੇ ਉਪਜਿਓ ਤਹੀ ਸਮਾਇਓ ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਜਾਨੀ ਤਬਹੂੰ ॥
jah tay upji-o tahee samaa-i-o ih biDh jaanee tabahooN.
He is absorbed into the One from which he originated, when he understands the Way.
ਜਹਾ ਜਹਾ ਇਹ ਦੇਹੀ ਧਾਰੀ ਰਹਨੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਓ ਕਬਹੂੰ ॥੧॥
jahaa jahaa ih dayhee Dhaaree rahan na paa-i-o kabahooN. ||1||
Wherever this body was fashioned, it was not allowed to remain there. ||1||

In plain words

Understanding the way, a person merges back into the One they came from.

Wherever this body was made, it was never meant to stay there.

You came from the One and return to it — the whole journey is a homecoming, and the body is a temporary lodging on the way.
The deeper layer

The verse states the soul's origin and destiny: it "is absorbed into the One from which he originated." We came from the One and return to it — the whole journey is a homecoming. And the body "was not allowed to remain" — a gentle memento-mori reminding us the body is a temporary lodging, not a permanent home. Knowing where you came from tells you where you're going.

A Question to Sit With

If your deepest self came from one source and returns to it, how does that frame this in-between time?
