Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The One is my very breath of life, the Giver of peace.

By grace, only a few come to know it.

The One is as essential as breath, yet known by few — because it hides in plain sight, closer than we usually look.
The deeper layer

This line says the One is as close to us as our own breath.

It is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line. That is the center of the whole shabad (hymn). Har paraan parabhoo sukh-daatay — the One is my praan, my breath of life, the Giver of peace. Breath is not something extra, like a treat. You live by it every second.

Then comes a gentle note: gur parsaad kaahoo jaatay — by the Guru's grace, only a few know Him. This is not about a special club. It just shows how precious that knowing is. It is a gift.

Why do so few notice? Think of your glasses sitting on your nose while you hunt the house for them. What is closest is often the hardest to see. The One hides in plain sight, nearer than we think to look.

A Question to Sit With

What is so close and essential to you that you rarely stop to actually notice it?
