Renounce your self-conceit, and grasp hold of the Guru's feet; hold tight to the hem of God's robe.

The heat of the ocean of fire does not affect one who longs for the Lord and Master's Sanctuary. ||1||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Let go of self-importance, grasp the teaching's feet, and hold tight to the One's robe.
The heat of the ocean of fire doesn't touch the one who longs for the Master's shelter.
Life's fires may still rage around you, but held close to the One, the heat doesn't scorch you.
The verse pictures safety in turmoil: "the heat of the ocean of fire does not affect" the one sheltered in the One. Life's fires still rage around such a person, but held to "the hem of God's robe," they are not scorched. Grip the robe, and the heat can't reach you.
A Question to Sit With
What 'fire' are you near right now? What would gripping the hem of something steady feel like?
