I am an insect and a worm; O True Guru, I seek Your Sanctuary; please, be merciful and bestow upon me the Light of the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||1||

In plain words

You who serve the One, true teacher, true first Being — I lay my prayer before you.

I'm a small crawling thing, an insect, a worm; I come under your shelter — be kind, and give me the light of the Name.

Standing before something vast, you can feel very small — and still be completely held inside its shelter.
The deeper layer

The Mehl 4 block opens in Guru Ram Das's characteristic register: naked humility and warm pleading. "I am an insect and a worm" is not self-hatred but the honest smallness of someone standing before the infinite — and, crucially, it is spoken from inside sanctuary, held, not exposed. The request is simply for light — the Name — to be given. This sets the block's keynote: everything good is asked for as a gift, in the posture of a child, not earned as a wage.

A Question to Sit With

When has admitting you needed help felt safe rather than shameful — because of who you were asking?
