When Comfort Ties Your Feet

ਮਾਨਸ ਕੋ ਜਨਮੁ ਲੀਨੁ ਸਿਮਰਨੁ ਨਹ ਨਿਮਖ ਕੀਨੁ ॥
maanas ko janam leen simran nah nimakh keen.
You obtained this human life, but you have not remembered the Lord in meditation, even for an instant.
ਦਾਰਾ ਸੁਖ ਭਇਓ ਦੀਨੁ ਪਗਹੁ ਪਰੀ ਬੇਰੀ ॥੧॥
daaraa sukh bha-i-o deen pagahu paree bayree. ||1||
For the sake of pleasure, you have become subservient to your woman, and now your feet are bound. ||1||

In plain words

You were given this human life, and you have not remembered the One, not even for the blink of an eye.

For the comforts of home and wife, you made yourself a servant, and now chains are tied around your feet.

Comfort can quietly tie your feet — but the knots are yours to loosen.
The deeper layer

This human life is a rare gift, and clinging to comfort can tie your feet so you never move toward the One.

Maanas ko janam leen — you were given a human life. That is a rare chance to wake up. It slips by when simran, remembering the One, gets no room at all. Not even nimakh, the blink of an eye.

The words then speak of being tied down by attachment to a wife and to pleasure, as if the feet were chained. The point is not that any person, or women, are a trap. The knot is our own clinging to comfort.

Think of a comfy couch and an endless stream of videos. Each one feels fine. But hours later, you have not moved toward anything you meant to do.

The knot is our own. And our own hands can always loosen it.

A Question to Sit With

Is there a comfort in your life that has quietly become a knot, keeping you from something that matters?
