Verse 3 of 3

Even the Dream Belongs to the One

ਨਾਨਕ ਜਨ ਕਹਿ ਪੁਕਾਰਿ ਸੁਪਨੈ ਜਿਉ ਜਗ ਪਸਾਰੁ ॥
naanak jan kahi pukaar supnai ji-o jag pasaar.
Servant Nanak proclaims that the vast expanse of this world is just a dream.
ਸਿਮਰਤ ਨਹ ਕਿਉ ਮੁਰਾਰਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਜਾ ਕੀ ਚੇਰੀ ॥੨॥੩॥
simrat nah ki-o muraar maa-i-aa jaa kee chayree. ||2||3||
Why not meditate on the Lord? Even Maya is His slave. ||2||3||

In plain words

Nanak says, calling out loud: this whole wide world is like a dream.

Why don't you remember the One? Even Maya, the world's glitter, is the One's servant.

Even the passing show belongs to the One — nothing here is outside that love.
The deeper layer

The world is like a dream, and even its glitter serves the One.

Supnai ji-o jag pasaar — the whole wide world is like a dream. Life here does not last forever. The verse says this gently, not gloomily.

Then comes a comforting turn. Maa-i-aa jaa kee chayree — even Maya, the passing show of the world, is the One's servant. So the dream is not an enemy or a jail. It belongs to the One too.

Think of a school play. The sets, the costumes and the lights are wonderful, and they come down after the show. The stage underneath stays.

Remembering the One means remembering the ground that the whole bright, passing show stands on.

A Question to Sit With

Does it change how you hold the world to imagine that even the passing parts belong to the One?
