What Lasts and What Doesn't

asthir jo maani-o dayh so ta-o tayra-o ho-ay hai khayh.
You believed that this body was permanent, but it shall turn to dust.
Why don't you chant the Name of the Lord, you shameless fool? ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

You believed this body would last forever, but it will turn to dust.

Why don't you say the Naam of the One, O foolish one, with no shame?

The body returns to the earth like a sandcastle to sand — but the turn toward the One is open any time.
The deeper layer

The body you thought would last forever returns to dust, so say the Naam of the One now.

Asthir jo maani-o dayh: you believed the body was permanent. So ta-o tayra-o ho-ay hai khayh: it will become dust, returning to the earth the way a sandcastle returns to sand. Ki-o na har ko naam layhi: why don't you say the Naam of the One?

Moorakh nilaaj means "foolish, shameless one." It is a sharp wake-up call, spoken out of care, and the turn toward the One stays open.

A Question to Sit With

What is something in your life that lasts, that you'd like to give more of your heart to?
