This Is How to Live

ਰਾਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਹੀਏ ਆਨਿ ਛਾਡਿ ਦੇ ਤੈ ਮਨ ਕੋ ਮਾਨੁ ॥

Let devotional worship of the Lord enter into your heart, and abandon the intellectualism of your mind.

naanak jan ih bakhaan jag meh biraaj ray. ||2||4||
O Servant Nanak, this is the way to live in the world. ||2||4||

In plain words

Let loving devotion to the One come into your heart, and let go of your mind's pride.

Nanak says: this is the way to live in the world.

A heart full of love and a mind at ease — this is how to live, right here in the world.
The deeper layer

Love for the One in the heart and a mind free of pride make the way to live, right here in the world.

The final verse of the whole raag gives its quiet resolution: raam bhagat hee-ay aan, let loving devotion to the One enter the heart, and chhaad day tai man ko maan, let go of the pride of the mind. Maan here is the ego's need to be clever and admired — close to haumai, the feeling of being a separate, self-important self. Guru Tegh Bahadur, signing as Nanak, closes with jag meh biraaj ray, live like this in the world. This is a call to live within life, beautifully — heart full of love, mind at ease, right in the middle of ordinary days. A fitting close to the smallest raag.

A Question to Sit With

What would change about your day if you set down the need to be right and just let your heart be full?
