Sikhism·Raag Jaitsree·Shabad 13
Verse 2 of 3

Is the One Beyond the World, or Inside It?

ਕੋ ਕਹਤੋ ਸਭ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਕਹਤੋ ਸਭ ਮਹੀਅਉ ॥
ko kahto sabh baahar baahar ko kahto sabh mahee-a-o.
Some say that He is beyond the world - totally beyond it, while others say that He is totally within it.
ਬਰਨੁ ਨ ਦੀਸੈ ਚਿਹਨੁ ਨ ਲਖੀਐ ਸੁਹਾਗਨਿ ਸਾਤਿ ਬੁਝਹੀਅਉ ॥੧॥
baran na deesai chihan na lakhee-ai suhaagan saat boojhhee-a-o. ||1||
His color cannot be seen, and His pattern cannot be discerned. O happy soul-brides, tell me the truth! ||1||

In plain words

Some say the One is entirely beyond the world; others say it is entirely within it.

Its color can't be seen, its shape can't be traced. O my companions, tell me the truth!

People argue: is the One out beyond the world, or inside it? And it has no color or shape to settle the matter. The honest soul holds the question open instead of grabbing a cheap answer.
The deeper layer

The verse names the great debate precisely: is the One beyond the world, or within it? Different voices insist on each. And the One "cannot be seen or traced" — it fits no color, no shape, so how do you settle the question? Guru Arjan lets the honest bafflement stand for a moment. This is a real theological knot, and he does not pretend it isn't. The soul genuinely wants to know: where is my Beloved — out there, or in here? The verse ends still asking, holding the question open, refusing to grab a cheap answer — which is exactly the humility that makes room for the true answer to come.

A Question to Sit With

Is it okay to sit with a big question honestly instead of rushing to a quick answer? What might that openness make room for?
