Taste the Real Sweetness and Everything Else Goes Bland
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Nothing seems sweet to the One's devotees except the One itself.
All other tastes are bland; I have tested them and seen.
Not-knowing, doubt and suffering leave when the teacher takes your side.
The One's feet have pierced my mind, and I am dyed in the deep crimson of its love.
My soul, breath, body and mind belong to the One; all falseness has left me.
The Pauree completes the taste-teaching with the authority of experience: "all other tastes are bland; I have tested them and seen." This is not secondhand doctrine but a report from someone who tried the other flavors and found them flat. Once you have tasted the real sweetness, the others go insipid by comparison — not through willpower but naturally, the way rich food ruins your appetite for cardboard. And the "crimson dye" of love (the permanent Rang) has set. The Pauree ends with total belonging — "soul, breath, body and mind belong to God" — and the departure of "all falsehood." When the real sweetness fills you, the false simply has no more room.
Have you ever enjoyed something so good that lesser versions stopped appealing to you? How is that different from forcing yourself to give something up?
