Raag Kaanraa
Commentary

Raag Kaanraa, Mehl 5 (Guru Arjan)

Lean your whole weight on the One, and receive the gift of fearlessness.

The Arc

The rahau leans everything on the One as sole support, honor, and sanctuary. The single long verse deepens it: You are my hope, my trust, my strength; with You I am light and glad and follow where You lead. The close names the crowning gift — abhai daan, fearlessness — received through the Name, sealed by laying the head at the feet of the holy.

Key Vocabulary

  • parnaa — support, the thing that holds you up
  • bharosaa — trust, reliance
  • bha-ojal — the wide waters of the world, crossed by grace
  • abhai daan — the gift of fearlessness

Themes and Cross-Connections

abhai daan (fearlessness) is one of Guru Arjan's most cherished gifts, the natural fruit of total trust. The whole shabad is a prayer of leaning — surrender read not as defeat but as the source of ease and courage.

For Raag Kaanraa

The raag's yearning becomes pure trust here, and trust becomes fearlessness.

Translation Notes

bha-ojal (the 'terrifying world-ocean') is rendered gently as 'the widest waters,' keeping the sense of crossing without dread, in line with the project's wellbeing lens.
