Raag Kaanraa
Commentary

Raag Kaanraa, Chaupade, Mehl 4 (Guru Ram Das)

Everything here shifts like shade on the ground; love of the One is the color that never fades.

The Arc

The rahau pictures the true treasure locked in the fortress of maya, won by the Guru's word. The shabad then sets impermanence (the moving shade of a tree, the body that will not stay) against permanence: the Steady One, a trust that grows in good company, and a color of love that never fades. It closes on the Name as healing medicine that makes the stumbling heart whole.

Key Vocabulary

  • garh / maa-i-aa — the fortress of the dazzling, passing world; the treasure locked inside it.
  • tarvar kee chhaa-i-aa — a tree's moving shade; impermanence.
  • asthir raam — the Steady, Stable One who does not shift.
  • a-ukhaDh — the Name as healing medicine.

Themes and Cross-Connections

The moving-shade image is a recurring Gurbani picture of the transient world, set against asthir (the steady One). The never-fading color (har rang) ties back to the fast-dye imagery of the undyed heart taking the One's color.

For Raag Kaanraa

Kaanraa's longing is steadied here: everything the heart clings to shifts, but the color of the One's love holds. The Name is the medicine that makes the ache whole.

Translation Notes

ham baho paap kee-ay apraaDhee (I am a sinner who has committed many sins) is rendered as honest stumbling healed by the medicine of the Name, framing wrongdoing as illness to heal rather than crime to condemn.
