Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
There is only One. Its Name is Truth. It is the Creator of all. It is fearless and full of love, beyond time, never born, shining on its own. And the One is found by the Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.
Meeting the holy people, my mind turns green and blossoms.
I give myself to those holy people, again and again, again and again. Joining the Sangat, I am carried across to the other side.
Being with people who love the One makes your mind come alive, like a dry field turning green after rain, and the Sangat carries you across.
This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the centre of the shabad. Mayraa man saaDh janaa(N) mil hari-aa means "meeting the holy people, my mind blossoms." Hari-aa means green and alive, like a plant that has just been watered.
Ha-o bal bal bal bal means "I am a sacrifice, a sacrifice, a sacrifice, a sacrifice": a glad, thankful giving of yourself, said four times over. Mil sangat paar utri-aa means "joining the Sangat, I am carried across." The Sangat is people gathered together to remember the One. Life can feel like wide water, and the Sangat is the boat.
Raag Kaanraa opens here, on the joy of being near.
Who are the people whose company makes you feel more alive and more yourself?
