Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
O mind, chant and remember the Lord of the World, the Lord of all.
The One, Har, Har, is beyond reach and too deep to measure.
Through the Guru's teaching, my mind has found the Lord.
This was written on my forehead from the very start.
The One is beyond reach, and the Guru's teaching helps you find that very One.
This is the rahaa-o line. Rahaa-o means "pause." It is the center of the shabad, like the chorus of a song.
It begins jap man gobid maaDho: "O mind, remember the Lord of the world." Then it says the One is agam agaaDho. Agam means out of reach. And agaaDho means too deep to measure, like an ocean with no bottom.
And yet: mat gurmat har parabh laaDho, "through the Guru's teaching, my mind finds the Lord God." Gurmat means the Guru's wisdom.
That is the surprise at the center. You cannot reach the One by trying harder, just as you cannot jump to the moon. But a gift can be given. The last line says this was written on the forehead. That means it is a blessing, given from the start.
What is something you could not force to happen but that came when you were ready?
