Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Sing the praises of the One, the Lord of all.
As you sing those praises, wrongdoing is washed away.
Through the Guru's teaching, listen to those praises with your own ears.
The One will be kind to you.
Singing and listening to what is good can wash the heart clean.
Singing and hearing the One's praise washes the heart clean, and the One is kind.
This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the centre of the shabad. Jas gaavat paap lahaan: singing praise washes wrongdoing away, like rain rinsing dust off a window. Sun jas kaan: listen with your ears. Singing and listening both do the cleaning. Kirpaan: the One will be kind to you.
