Sikhism·Raag Kaanraa·Shabad 15
Verse 3 of 5

Company, Not Ceremony

ਕੋਟਿ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਹ ਨ ਸੋਧਾ ॥
kot karam kar dayh na soDhaa.
The body is not purified by millions of rituals.
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਹਿ ਮਨੁ ਪਰਬੋਧਾ ॥੨॥
saaDhsangat meh man parboDhaa. ||2||
The mind is awakened and enlightened only in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The body is not made clean by doing millions of rituals.

In the Sangat of holy people, the mind wakes up and sees clearly.

In the Sangat, the sleeping mind wakes up.
The deeper layer

The mind wakes up among people who remember the One together.

Kot karam kar dayh na soDhaa: millions of ritual acts do not make the body clean. The verse aims at empty habit, never at any one faith's practice. SaaDhsangat meh man parboDhaa: in the saaDhsangat, the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One — the mind is awakened. What changes a person is the company they keep and the attention they bring.

A Question to Sit With

When do you go through the motions, and when do you pay full attention?
