More Than The Song

ਗਾਵਨਹਾਰੀ ਗਾਵੈ ਗੀਤ ॥
gaavanhaaree gaavai geet.
The singer sings the songs,
ਤੇ ਉਧਰੇ ਬਸੇ ਜਿਹ ਚੀਤ ॥੧॥
tay uDhray basay jih cheet. ||1||
but she alone is saved, within whose consciousness the Lord abides. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The singer sings the songs,

but the ones carried across are those in whose hearts the One lives.

The song lifts you when what it sings about lives in your heart.
The deeper layer

Singing about the One lifts you when the One lives in your heart.

Gaavanhaaree gaavai geet: the singer sings the songs. Tay uDhray basay jih cheet: but the one who is carried across is the one whose heart the One lives in. Carried across means lifted safely over life's troubles, like a boat over a river.

Think of saying "I'm sorry." Said without meaning it, the words fall flat. Said from the heart, they change everything. The song on the outside matters most when it carries something true on the inside.

A Question to Sit With

When has something you said mattered because you meant it with your whole heart?
