Kaanraa, Fifth Mehl:
ਤੇਰੋ ਜਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਸੁਨਤ ਉਮਾਹਿਓ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
tayro jan har jas sunat umaahi-o. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Your humble servant listens to Your Praises with delight. ||1||Pause||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Your servant listens to Your praises and fills up with delight.
Deep listening to what is good makes joy rise up on its own.
Hearing the praise of the One fills the heart with delight.
This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Here it stands alone and holds the whole shabad. Tayro jan har jas sunat umaahi-o: Your servant, hearing Your praise, brims with delight. Umaahi-o is joy welling up from inside. Listening becomes a joy that rises on its own, the way a smile comes when you hear a friend's voice.
A Question to Sit With
