In plain words

There is only One. And the One is found by the True Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.

My thirst is gone, all gone, now that I have met the holy people.

The five thieves inside, greed, anger and the rest, have run away, and I rest in easy peace. Singing, singing, singing the praises of the One, I see my Beloved.

Among holy people the inner thieves lose their grip, and thirst turns to song.
The deeper layer

Meet holy people, and the thirst inside you is quenched; the five thieves run off, and you sing in easy peace.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad.

Tikh boojh ga-ee: the thirst is gone. Mil saaDh janaa: by meeting holy people. Panch bhaagay chor: the five thieves have run away. These are the five pulls inside a person: strong wanting, anger, greed, clinging and pride.

Sehjay sukhaino: in natural ease and peace. Gaavtee gaavtee gaavtee: singing, singing, singing. The word comes three times, like a song that keeps going because the heart is happy.

A Question to Sit With

Who helps you feel calm and more yourself when you are with them?
