In plain words

There is only One. And the One is found by the True Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.

Give up your pride and your need to look big.

The Loving, Kind One is watching over all. O mind, be humble as the dust beneath His feet.

Strength begins where pride is set down.
The deeper layer

Set down your pride; the Kind One sees everything, and a humble mind stays close.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad.

Ti-aagee-ai gumaan maan: give up pride and showing off. Paykhtaa da-i-aal laal: the Kind, Beloved One is watching. Man charan rayn: O mind, become the dust of the feet. Dust lies low on the road and asks for nothing.

Think of a tree heavy with fruit. The more fruit it carries, the lower its branches bend.

A Question to Sit With

When has staying humble helped you more than showing off?
