Speaking of God, filth and pollution are burnt away; This comes by meeting with the Guru, and not by any other efforts. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When I speak of the One, the dirt and grime are burned away.

This comes by meeting the Guru, and by no other way.

The heart clears not by effort alone but by turning toward the light.
The deeper layer

Speaking of the One burns the grime off the heart, and this comes by meeting the Guru.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad, like the chorus of a song.

Parabh kahan malan dahan. Kahan means speaking. Malan means dirt. Dahan means burning. When we speak of the One, the grime on the heart burns off, the way sunshine dries a muddy path.

Then: gur milay aan nahee upaa-o, "it comes by meeting the Guru, by no other way." Upaa-o means a trick or a method. It is like learning to swim. You can read every book about swimming. But you learn when a good teacher gets in the water with you.

A Question to Sit With

What helps clear your mind when it feels heavy or cluttered?
