After Every Effort, Peace Comes With The Name

All sorts of efforts, austerities, wanderings and various speeches - none of these will lead you to find the Lord's Place.

I have considered all considerations, O Nanak, but peace comes only by vibrating and meditating on the Name. ||2||2||39||

In plain words

All kinds of efforts, hard practices, wandering from place to place, and endless talk: none of them find the place where the One lives.

Nanak says: I have weighed every way there is, and peace comes only from remembering the Naam.

After trying everything, the simplest path — remembering — is what brings peace.
The deeper layer

After trying every kind of effort, you find peace by remembering the Naam.

The verse lists many efforts. Two of them are tapan bharman. Tapan means putting the body through hard trials. Bharman means wandering from place to place, searching. Add anik kathan, lots of clever talk. None of it finds where the One lives.

Then: soDh sagar soDhnaa, "I have weighed every option." It is like trying every key on a big ring to open a door. At last one key works.

Sukh naankaa bhaj naa-o: "peace, O Nanak, is in remembering the Naam." Sukh means peace. The simplest key was the one that opened the door.

A Question to Sit With

When has the simplest answer turned out to be the best one?
