The Purifier of sinners, the Lover of His devotees, the Destroyer of fear - He carries us across to the other side. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

There is only One. And the One is found by the True Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.

The One makes clean those who have gone wrong, and loves those who love Him.

He takes away fear, and He carries us across to the other side.

No one is too lost to be lifted and carried home.
The deeper layer

The One lifts up those who have gone wrong, takes away fear, and carries you across.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad.

Patit paavan: the One who makes clean those who have fallen. Bhagat bachhal: loving to the devoted, the way a mother cow loves her calf. Bhai haran: the One who takes fear away. Taaran taran: the boat that carries you across.

Picture a ferry crossing a wide river on a dark night, and you are safely on board.

A Question to Sit With

Who has helped you across a hard time when you couldn't do it alone?
