Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

My One is the Lord of the World, the Lord of the Universe. Please save me, O Lord of all creation.

Nanak says: I am the servant of the servant of Your servants. O One, be kind to me; protect me and keep me in the company of Your people.

The best place to ask to belong is among people who love goodness.
The deeper layer

Ask the One to keep you safe and to keep you in the company of the One's people.

Ham raakh layho jagannaath means "save me, O Lord of the Universe." Jan naanak daas daas daasan ko means "servant Nanak is the servant of the servant of the servants." It is glad humility: the joy of taking the lowest place in a circle of love. Guru Ram Das signs his verses as Nanak.

Raakho jan saath means "keep me with Your people." The closing prayer asks for one thing: to belong among those who love the One.

A Question to Sit With

What group of people would you most want to belong to, and why?
