Chant And Be Carried Across

ਕਾਨੜਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ॥
kaanrhaa mehlaa 4.
Kaanraa, Fourth Mehl:
ਜਪਿ ਮਨ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਤਰਾਵੈਗੋ ॥
jap man har har naam taraavaigo.
O mind, chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, and be carried across.
jo jo japai so-ee gat paavai ji-o Dharoo par-hilaad samaavaigo. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Whoever chants and meditates on it is emancipated. Like Dhroo and Prahlaad, they merge in the Lord. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

O my mind, say the Naam of the One, Har, Har, and it will carry you across.

Whoever says it is set free, and merges into the One, the way Dhroo and Prahlaad did.

Remembering the One carries you gently across life's hard waters.
The deeper layer

Remembering the One carries you across, as it carried two children in the old stories.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the centre of the shabad. Jap man har har naam taraavaigo: say the Naam, O mind, and you will be carried across. So-ee gat paavai: whoever remembers is set free. Dhroo and Prahlaad are two children from old Indian stories who held on to the One with their whole hearts. Dhroo became the steady North Star. Their stories show that even the young and the small are held.

A Question to Sit With

Who is someone, even a child, whose steady faith inspires you?
