Asleep In Forgetting, Awake In Wisdom

Attached to ignorance, people are falling asleep; attached to the Guru's spiritual wisdom, they awaken.

naanak bhaanai aapnai ji-o bhaavai tivai chalaavaigo. ||8||1||
O Nanak, by His Will, He makes us walk as He pleases. ||8||1||

In plain words

Held by not-knowing, people fall asleep. Held by the Guru's wisdom, they wake up.

Nanak says: by the One's own will, the One moves us along however the One pleases.

Wisdom is like waking up to what was always there.
The deeper layer

Forgetting the One is like being asleep, and the Guru's wisdom wakes us up.

Agi-aan means not knowing. It lulls us to sleep. Gi-aan means wisdom, and the Guru's wisdom wakes us. Think of an alarm on a school morning. The day was waiting all along. You just had to open your eyes.

Bhaanai aapnai: by the One's own will, the One moves each of us along as is fitting. Think of a river current we are already part of, carrying us gently where we belong.

A Question to Sit With

What is something that once felt asleep in you and then woke up?
