The Guru Is The Boatman

ਭਉ ਬੈਰਾਗੁ ਭਇਆ ਹੈ ਬੋਹਿਥੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਖੇਵਟੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਤਰਾਵੈਗੋ ॥
bha-o bairaag bha-i-aa hai bohith gur khayvat sabad taraavaigo.
Let the Fear of God and neutral detachment be the boat; the Guru is the Boatman, who carries us across in the Word of the Shabad.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਰਿ ਭੇਟੀਐ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਮੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਵੈਗੋ ॥੭॥
raam naam har bhaytee-ai har raamai naam samaavaigo. ||7||
Meeting with the Lord, the Name of the Lord, merge in the Lord, the Name of the Lord. ||7||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Awe and a gentle letting go have become the boat. The Guru is the boatman, who carries you across through the Word.

Meeting the One, the Naam of the One, you merge into the One, into the Naam.

Awe and gentle letting-go carry you across to the One.
The deeper layer

Awe and gentle letting-go are the boat, and the Guru steers it safely across.

Bha-o bairaag: bha-o is loving awe, and bairaag is a calm letting-go. Together they become the boat. Bohith is the boat, and khayvat is the boatman. The Guru is at the helm, and the Guru's Word carries you over the water.

Samaavaigo means melting into the One. Think of a small child asleep in the back seat on a long drive home. They do not need to know the road. They are carried by someone who does.

A Question to Sit With

When you feel unsure, what carries you safely to the other side?
